Environment:
I believe strongly that students need a safe, comfortable, and secure classroom environment for learning to occur. This does not mean that we sit on pillows and drink hot chocolate. It means that our classroom will be based in treating each other with RESPECT. Before the first lesson on the first day of school, we discuss this. What is respect? What does respect look like? What does respect NOT look like? Why is it important? We will encourage each other, build each other up, and be each other's cheerleaders. We spend 10 months together and if we can treat each other respectfully, it will go smoothly. Work Hard, Play Hard: We will work hard every day! However, I've not forgotten that these are still KIDS and they need play too. It is healthy for their brains. It is good for their body. We will have "brain breaks" during the day and move around in some way- dancing, games, etc. We will have recess daily. Fun: Not everything about school can be exciting and wonderful ALL the time, but it is my goal for school to be a place that students WANT to be everyday! Seems crazy, right? I like to have fun. I like learning to be fun. I love laughter and smiles and seeing students learning at the SAME time. It's amazing! Children are Unique: Every child is different. They have different learning styles, different personalities, different strengths and weaknesses, different likes and dislikes. This is where I get to be the student as I learn these things about each child. I observe, I watch, I assess, I study, and I pay attention. The more I know the child, the better I can teach them. The more I know, the better I can reach them. Creativity: Because students are unique and learn differently, I try to incorporate as many creative activities as possible. My favorite activities are the ones where the students get to be the teachers. I am always amazed with the things they come up with. I love to see skits, art, songs, and dances that they create. |
