Meet our new class pet. He doesn't have a name yet, but he is a male dwarf hamster. The kids have been working hard for this to become a reality. First, they had to write letters to Mr. Johnson (a real person) requesting items to be used or borrowed for the hamster. Then they had to do some research about hamsters and find out what they need and how to be good pet owners. The things they learned are chronicled in a class book they created titled If You Give Mrs. Moon's Class a Hamster. Once we received the necessary items from Mr. Johnson, they then had to write Thank You letters and correctly address envelopes to send the letters in. When our new friend joined us today, I took them outside to show them how to clean the cage, feed, and water the hamster and make sure he had everything he needs. We even got to watch him roll around in his ball! It was an exciting day in Mrs. Moon's class! NOW HE NEEDS A NAME!!! Suggestions can be entered until Wednesday and then the choices will be narrowed and voted on. I will update this as soon as we know!
Thank you to all of the students and families who came to OPEN HOUSE on August 13th. I was able to pass along a lot of valuable information. If you were unable to make it, I am sending handouts of the entire presentation home with your child. If you have PowerPoint on a computer at home, you can click below to view it.
I hope you have a great week!
It was a very exciting day today in Mrs. Moon's class! I got to meet some wonderful new students and also better acquaint myself with some that I already knew. Here are some things we did today: -We spent a lot of time talking about what we wanted our class to be like. -We familiarized ourselves with some routines for the classroom, hallway, bathroom, and cafeteria. -We had a PAPER SNOWBALL fight and made pyramids using plastic cups without using our hands. -We had lunch (very important) -We had recess (also very important) - The students had the opportunity to answer the following questions on chart paper: 1. What can I do to be successful? 2. What kind of teacher do you want? 3. What can Mrs. Moon do to help you be successful? 4. What do you expect to learn this year? 5. School is important because... Here are the charts they made. We will have discussion about this tomorrow. Everyone was looking pretty sleepy by the end of the day. I will be sending home additional information later in the week about the class schedule, rules, homework, and snack. All - in - all, we had a fantastic day! I can't wait to see them again tomorrow!! Love, Mrs. Moon We are half way through our second week of school and we are starting in on our actual academic work. We have been learning letter writing skills and I've been showing them the 5 parts of a letter (date, greeting, body, closing, and signature). The kids have practiced writing their own letters and have composed their own letters to my friend and requesting the use of his hamster cage. HAMSTER??? YES!! We are talking about getting a class pet. This hasn't been completely decided upon yet.
For reading, we have been learning about how to select books at an appropriate reading level. I have explained the 25 book and book summary requirement for the year and I've also explained HOW to write a summary. They should be working on this already. Today, we also started learning about the Bill of Rights! What are the BILL OF RIGHTS?? They will soon be learning all about it! **** Don't forget about OPEN HOUSE Thursday (tomorrow) at the school ***** Here is a picture of some students working on the final drafts of their letters today: |
